British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
