Three Lions Coach Reveals His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement has been remarkable. Starting with his first major job, he developed a standing for innovative drills and great man-management. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the peak in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their methods include mental assessments, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the England collective and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the integrity. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings he could find to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea took over, within months, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he brought Barry over of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
